CBD For Dogs – A Miracle Cure for Seizures, Pain + Cancer (what you need to know)?

it seems like you ion: underline;">can't look anything up on the Internet at the moment without reading claims that CBD oil for dogs will cure any and every medical problem imaginable from seizures to pain to anxiety and even cancer CBD oil is the miracle cure your vet is unlikely to be talking about yet hi I'm dr.

Alex and welcome to our pets health where my aim is to help you and your pet live a healthier happier life so make sure you're subscribed and share this video with anyone who you think might be interested so let's start off with exactly ine;">what CBD oil is so CBD oil is just one of many active chemicals found in marijuana and other members of the cannabis family hemp in fact is one of the biggest sources and you'll see why in just a second unlike THC which is the psychoactive compound found in marijuana CBD does not cause dogs or people to become high or euphoric and is not addictive in fact CBD oil is felt to be a very safe product with few side effects and those that are described only really a relatively minor now this is quite unlike THC which while still relatively safe ine;">can in fact be poisonous and even deadly to dogs and cats and I've actually discussed more about marijuana effects on dogs and the signs of poisoning in a guest video that I've done for the YouTube channel McCann dogs which I'll link up here and in the description once that goes live so what are the claims about CBD oil for dogs well I'm sure you've read some of the claims already it doesn't take long to find claims that CBD oil or treat or cure pretty much every condition imaginable in both people and our pets now if you believe everything you read and this is something that I don't really recommend CBD oil will cure your pets cancer it will eradicate anxiety and stress it will stop all seizures when other drugs have failed it will act as a powerful antioxidant it will eliminate pain it will prevent brain deterioration it will also prevent autoimmune disease it will reduce nausea and improve heart health there are probably plenty more claims but this list shows the strong feelings people have the CBD oil can be beneficial for pretty much every body system you ine;">can think of to know if we should be using CBD oil in our pet dogs though we first need to consider the evidence behind these claims so what's the evidence that CBD oil actually does work well this really depends on what you mean by evidence there's loads of anecdotal evidence and testimonials from people who have taken it themselves or have given it to their pets and seen a really dramatic benefit in reality though it is absolutely impossible to draw any firm conclusions from stories like these because of the significant risk of bias and things like care giver placebo which I've discussed before these stories though do make further research into the benefits of CBD oil in dogs important to prove that the effects are really there or to prove that they're not there is more evidence than the number of studies though looking into CBD oil is rapidly expanding at the moment though most of the studies have been done in laboratories looking at cell samples grown in test tubes and petri dishes and this is there is actually very little evidence in well-designed studies involving with large numbers of patients be that human or animal so it claims that CBD oil stops cancers growing and results in their destruction coming apart from lab studies where cervical and leukemia cells amongst others have been grown in the lab before then being exposed to CBD oil now in the case of leukemia study these cells were then injected into mice and the results were assessed now again this warrants further investigation but it's pretty far removed from a real-life situation and so claims of proof that CBD oil cures cancer a pretty part far-fetched at this stage so the next effects are on Alzheimer's and brain aging and they're similarly in an early stage of investigation so kalyan cognitive dysfunction is something that I've talked about before and it's actually very similar to Alzheimer's and make sure you check out my video that I'll link up here all about dog dementia and so any benefit in this area will be a huge boost to our senior dogs again there there's no conclusive evidence of a true effect in dogs with dementia so the next claim is that CBD oil reduces seizures and yeah research here is more advanced there are some promising studies showing a reduction in sea frequency in children who have actually not responded to other drugs so it's said to be drug resistant seizures and there's also currently a study going on and that's coming to an end looking at the use of CBD oil to treat epilepsy and dogs still having seizures despite other treatments being given okay next up we have a reduction in pain due to arthritis and actually the one published study into the use of CBD oil in dogs to treat an actual disease was looking at arthritic dogs and it was a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study now you don't really need to worry about what all this means but it just represents a good effort to avoid any bias and to make any results more reliable although the number of dogs involved was pretty small so one part of this study looked at the amount of drug present in the body at different doses and how long it lasts in dogs and the second part of the study showed a statistically signifiion: underline;">cant increase in comfort levels when arthritic dogs were treated with CBD oil compared to when they were given with a placebo so this is actually really encouraging with a couple of caveats the first is that like I said only a small number of dogs were used only a ferritic pain was investigated and this benefit may not relate to other painful conditions and also there was no comparison to other pain killers to suggest how effective CBD or is in comparison to our more common pain killers that we use so is CBD oil league well in many parts of the world marijuana is illegal and generally this is because of the THC it contains so CBD oil extracted from marijuana ine;">can also contain a lot of THC and so is also often illegal hemp on the other hand contains very tiny THC levels and the CBD all that comes from home typically contains less than 0.

3 percent of this THC and this is felt to be safe and really of no concern when drug abuse is considered and things like that so that said the legal status of all cannabis products is rapidly changing across the world and as a result it's becoming more and more readily available so CBD oil extracted from hemp is legal in all 50 US states it will become legal in Canada after October the 17th of this year along with all other cannabis products it's also legal in the UK and it's available with a prescription in Australia now if you're thinking about buying CBD oil just make sure you double check your local legislation as this is a dynamic changing situation where it is legal CB deal can likely be bought at your local pharmacy or health food shop as well as online so finally should you give your dog CBD oil why have your bet not recommended it so what's the bottom line well it's all too easy to get caught up in the hype and promise of a new treatment or supplement ion: underline;">whatever it may be you'll know by now that I'm a big believer in following and listening to the evidence that's actually available wherever possible and I have a whole series titled evidence matters which discuss kind of listening to the evidence so my general feeling is to watch this space there's a flurry of active research in this area especially in the human medical community and this will only spill over into the veterinary sphere and there are specific threatened areas going on as well initial results are promising but we know that a positive result in cells running the lab doesn't always translate to positive results in living animals and we know that positive results in people so it doesn't always mean that the results are the same in our dogs and cats so current treatments that are known to be effective should not be ignored or abandoned because of something that may or may not work to do so would be to do your pet a disservice and in effect be running a bad experiment with the potential to seriously compromised their quality of life and that's obviously something that we really want to avoid that said trying CBD oil is something to consider if you've tried every other treatment option available to your pet and there are either problems with side effects or the treatments just not working as well as you would hope so this might be because your dog is still painful from arthritis it's still having having epileptic seizures or experiencing a deterioration brain function from dementia despite treatment if you do decide to give your dog CBD oil you should watch closely for side-effects and try and assess any response in as unbiased away as possible you also need to be careful where you source the product from FDA testing has shown that many CBD products actually contain very little if any CBD and this is a common situation for all supplements so my general recommendations would be to ask your vet which products they advise don't decide based on price alone you often get ine;">what you pay for stick to known trusted brands where possible and don't purchase Internet only products as with all treatment plans you really should discuss the option of CBD oil with your vet and because this is a rapidly developing new topic it may actually be that your vet has very little knowledge about CBD or it may be that they have personally not had any experience of recommending it to their patients it may be that they are reluctant to recommend it because of the lack of knowledge around how effective it really is the lack of knowledge about how often and how much should be given and the lack of knowledge about side-effects and reactions with other medications or with other conditions your dog might have so these are all highly valid concerns now CBD oil in my opinion has the potential to become a regular treatment recommendation for a whole number of really common conditions our dogs and our cats suffer from it still early days though so watch this space as more research is done into the safety and dosing and more evidence proving or disproving the beneficial effects of CBD or is released so really let me know your experiences with CBD and your pets in the comments down below I'd be really interested in hearing and why you tried it and what your pet's experience was like on it did it help were there any side effects did it make no difference let me know I'd love to hear but until next time i'm dr.
